Kwara moves to mandate students to provide parents’ tax clearance before school registration

The Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KWIRS) has asked that indigene students be mandated to provide their parents’ tax payment clearance certificates during school registration to stop tax evasion.

The KWIRS chairperson, Mrs. Shade Omoniyi said this during a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor of Kwara State University, Professor Muhammed Mustapha Akanbi SAN in his office on Tuesday.

She affirmed that it is the avowed mandate of KWIRS to educate taxpayers on the benefits of prompt payment of tax and checkmate the issue of low remittance, under deduction, and tax deduction.

Omoniyi revealed that KWIRS sought to ensure that all revenue lines are on KWIRS payment platforms in KWASU.

She appealed to the VC to help in shoring up the revenue streams of the KWIRS by integrating individuals and businesses domiciled on the campus into KWIRS payment platform.

Speaking earlier, Prof. Akanbi appreciated the visiting team for honouring KWASU with such a productive courtesy call, especially at a time the management is mapping out strategies to ease the financial burdens of the institution.

He further maintained that it was important for the two public entities to work in tandem for the development of Kwara State, thereby highlighting the areas of collaboration to include: sponsorship of professorial chairs, endowment funds, research grants and project funding.

The VC also noted that KWASU through its Business School in Ilorin could train the staff of KWIRS to improve its operational capabilities.

She assured the chairperson of KWIRS that, KWASU under his tutelage would comply with tax policies and directives of the agency, thereby appealing to the agency to treat KWASU with clemency in its tax policies as the institution is not subvention aided.
