Kwara Assembly tells Gov AbdulRazaq to recruit more KWARTMA officers

The Kwara State House of Assembly on Tuesday urged the state government to come up with a work plan to employ more personnel for the Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) as part of efforts geared toward improving the discharge of their official duties.

The legislative body, as part of its resolutions, also directed the State Traffic Management Authority to intensify enlightenment Programme on use of roads and road signs in partnership with unions of commercial drivers and business owners, adding that violators of road traffic laws should be made liable to appropriate penalties.

The resolution was reached following the adoption of a motion sponsored by Hon. Muhammed Baba Salihu(Okuta/Yashikira), who stated that a significant percentage of road users in Ilorin Metropolis especially commercial vehicles drivers, Tricycle operators (popularly called Keke) and commercial Motorcycle (Okada) riders are in the habit of exhibiting careless attitudes especially when parking at the road sides to pick up passengers.

In his lead debate, he expressed concerns that owners of business premises and retail shops in different parts of the city have also resorted to indiscriminate use of ‘No Parking’ signs in the frontage of their premises, thereby denying other taxpayers access to some spaces.

Meanwhile, the State Assembly also urged the State Government to call on the leadership of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), Association of Independent Transporters (AIT), Tricycles Operators Association of Nigeria (TOAN) and other transporter’ Unions to encourage their members to ensure decorum in parking by roadside and to henceforth restrict their operations to Motor Parks to the ones officially allotted to them for the purpose.
