Fact check: Mike Ozekhome’s claims on number of polling units in Nigeria is false

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Human rights Lawyer, Mike Ozekhome has claimed the total number of polling units in Nigeria.

Ozekhome claimed while answering questions from the reporter of control TV on the last Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections.

In the interview, titled ‘INEC betrayed over 100 million of Nigeria by going against its Electoral law’, Ozekhome summarily faulted the presidential election and its process.


Ozekhome said in the interview that there are about 127,974 polling units in the country.

Fact check247 took a dig deep into the total number of polling units in Nigeria on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) website and it discovered that Nigeria has 176,846 polling units.


Mike Ozekhome’s claims that Nigeria has 127,974 is false.


The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in 2021 announced that it has created additional polling units, most of which were formerly being used as voting points.

Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman said that the commission converted a total of 56,872 voting points and voting point settlements into polling units.

With this, Nigeria now has a total of 176,846 polling units.
