Management of Ekiti State University, (EKSU) Ado Ekiti, on Tuesday April 11, 2023 decided to shut down the academic institution for two weeks with effect from today Tuesday, April 11, 2023.
With this development, academic activities on EKSU campus are suspended for two weeks.
The two weeks suspension of academic activities of the state owned institution was approved by its Vice Chancellor, Professor Edward Olanipekun, on behalf of the Senate of the University.
This came as a reaction to demonetization by students on Tuesday April 11 over increase in school fees and late registration fees by the management of the institution.
The students locked the gate of the school, barring staff from moving in or out of the citadel of learning.
They also blocked the Ado Ekiti-Iworoko highway to show their dissatisfaction with increment in the fees.
The University’s Head, Directorate of Information & Corporate Affairs of the university, Mr Bode Olofinmuagun in a statement released to newsmen in Ado-Ekiti, said: “Arising from the above, all students of the university are ordered to vacate the campus premises immediately and should not be seen within the campus premises for the next two weeks.
“Parents and guardians are hereby advised to invite their wards home immediately.
“Any student found wandering around the university premises does so at his/her own risk.”
Report has it that the university charged the sum of N5,000 for late registration.
The students were standing against increase in school fees, internet services fees and other fees.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics, Professor Ayodele Babatope, said the students’ disobedience caused the crisis, as they refused to register for academic activities on time as directed.
The DVC said the management of the school reduced the N10,000 penalty to N5,000 following the receival of complaints from students.
Olofinmuagun further revealed that, “Examination is to start next week. Late registration fees was reduced from the earlier N10,000 to N5,000 after the leadership of the Students Union Government (SUG) of the institution appealed to the management for reduction.”
He said students who have not paid their school fees were the ones championing the protest.
