Road setbacks: Kwara assembly asks Gov AbdulRazaq to relocate displaced traders
The Kwara State House of Assembly on Wednesday, during plenary, urged Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to direct the Ministry of Business Innovation and Technology to interface traders displaced as a result of reclamation of road setbacks and Urban renewal for relocation to unused spaces in the markets already in existence in different parts of the State Capital.
The state assembly made this appeal in a motion moved by by Hon.Babatunde Ayi Olatundun (Ilorin-North -West), and seconded by Hon.Lawal Ayansola Saliu (Ipaye/Malete/Oloru)on the need to relocate roadside/street traders on road setbacks to existing markets which is in line with the urban renewal and road setback reclamation programmes of the Kwara state government
Hon. Babatunde Ayi, while expressing awareness of the transformation of ilorin, the state capital into a cosmopolitan with successive administrations in the state, believed that engaging in the establishment of markets in different parts of the city and other urban centers equipped with modern facilities will ease business activities and keep traders off the roadside.l while calling for strategies to be put in place to relocate the displaced traders to the existing markets in different parts of the State capital.
The state assembly, therefore, asked the Governor to direct the Ministry of Business Innovation and Technology to draw up incentives and other schemes that will make existing unused markets attractive, affordable, and accessible to interested traders, while also calling on traders displaced from roadsides as a result of road setback reclamation and urban renewal programme of the State government to take advantage of the schemes to be put in place by the ministry of Business Innovation and Technology to relocate to and occupy the existing unused spaces in markets in different parts of the state Capital.
The house also urged the Governor to direct Ministry of Local Government Chieftaincy Affairs and Community Development to liaise with the Local Government Councils in the State towards the establishment of more modern markets to meet the fast-growing status of the State Capital and the respective Local Government Headquarters.
