The House of Representatives has commended the organized labour, led by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), for their decision to shelve the planned nationwide strike.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu, in a statement issued on Tuesday, lauded the labour unions for their responsible action, noting that the suspension of the strike was in the best interest of the Nigerian people and the economy.
Kalu acknowledged that had the organised labour gone ahead with the planned strike, it would have delivered a significant shock to the Nigerian economy.
He emphasized that dialogue between the government and labour was a crucial step in finding a solution to the challenges facing the country.
The Deputy Speaker also extended his commendation to all parties involved in reaching the agreement between the government and organised labour. He emphasized that this outcome demonstrated the effectiveness of dialogue in achieving positive results. Kalu stated, “We have come to a place where reasoning and dialogue to resolve issues is the ultimate.”
He further praised the federal government for allocating N100 million for the procurement of CNG-powered buses and for making provisions to acquire CNG kits to initiate the conversion process in the country.
Kalu expressed confidence in the President’s ability to engage the productive sector and drive economic recovery.
He highlighted the improvement in oil production, from 1.2 million barrels per day to 1.45 million barrels per day, as reported in the third-quarter microeconomic report, emphasizing the need for continued synergy to optimize oil production.
