Renowned Kenyan pan-Africanist and human rights activist, Patrick Lumumba, has emphasized that the liberation of the African continent would not be achieved through fasting and prayer alone.
He said this while delivering a compelling message at The Platform, a non-political and non-denominational event organized by The Covenant Nation in Lagos.
Lumumba highlighted two crucial areas that leaders must address to save Africa: the issue of conflict and a change in governance. He underscored the significance of governance, stating that without addressing this key aspect, Africa’s progress would remain stagnant.
In his words, “Africa has become a continent where after every election, there is conflict because the pursuit of power is the cutthroat competition where our throats are actually cut. We have a problem in that direction, and the sooner we resolve that, the safer we will be. Africa can rise, and Africa will rise, but it is not going to rise by prayer and fasting.”
Lumumba pointed out that freedom wouldn’t be handed to Africa on a silver platter; rather, the continent must stand up and take responsibility for itself. He emphasized that Africans must pray and fast but should also be aware that action is needed. Drawing from biblical references, he highlighted the need for effort and action to bring about change.
He concluded by emphasizing that the bold steps taken today will pave the way for a better future for generations to come, reinforcing the idea that the efforts made now are for the current generation and those yet to be born.
