Police debunks bandit invasion in Oke Oyi community, warns against false alerts
The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed as false a reported bandit invasion in Oke-Oyi earlier this morning, warning that those responsible for spreading fake security alerts will be prosecuted.
The Command said panic broke out around Government Girls Secondary School, Oke-Oyi, at about 9:15 a.m. following claims that suspected bandits had entered the area.
The Divisional Police Officer in charge of Oke-Oyi promptly deployed officers to the scene to assess the situation and secure the school and the surrounding community.
According to the police, preliminary findings traced the alarm to a woman who allegedly rushed into the school premises claiming bandits had arrived. The unverified claim sparked fear among students and staff, leading to a temporary disruption of academic activities.
However, the Command clarified that no such incident occurred.
“There was no bandit attack, no sighting of bandits, and no security breach within the school or anywhere in Oke-Oyi community or Kwara State,” the statement said.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ojo Adekimi, condemned the spread of false security information, noting that such actions could incite panic, disrupt public order, and divert security resources from genuine emergencies.
The police stated that efforts are underway to identify the source of the false alarm, adding that anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law.
Residents were urged to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information, especially on sensitive security matters. The Command also encouraged the public to verify reports through appropriate channels and report suspicious activities to the nearest police formation.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace and security across the state, assuring residents that adequate measures remain in place to protect lives and property.
SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, Police Public Relations Officer, signed the statement on behalf of the Commissioner of Police.
