The Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahaman AbdulRazaq recently approved payment of #10,000 fuel subsidy removal palliative to civil servants in the state and undergraduate students of the state origin.

After the approval, the government released a registration portal for students, while that of the public servants are to be paid to their personal account.

While the public servants’ palliatives will continue to be paid until a new minimum wage is approved, the palliative for the students is expected to be a one time affair.

The government said that the palliatives for students can be accessed through this portal https://scholarship.kw.gov.ng/palliative

However, The Informant247 fact-check team has discovered a fake application portal being circulated across social media. The portal has been shared multiple times and distributed mostly on WhatsApp.

The Informant247 fact-check team has taken a due check of the portal due to its sensitivity and dubious features.

Verification

The fake portal that is being circulated on social media only gives three stages for application and human verification tasks.

The portal doesn’t provide a timeline for applicants and it reads:

1.Share it with 5 groups or 15 friends on WhatsApp (Click on the “SHARE” icon below).

2. You will be redirected automatically to our “WITHDRAWAL LINK” page after the GREEN verification bar is filled.

3. You will receive a confirmation Email/SMS Within 24 hours After Successful Application”

When compared with the original portal released by the government, it does not provide any eligibility criteria for registration

Government registration procedures involve five stages as against that of the fake portal.

Government also added that eligible applicants have between 7th August, 2023 and midnight 30th August, 2023 to register.

A further search on the website attached to the fake portal also revealed that it has created several phishing links for different inaccessible and unauthorized funds.

How do phishing links work?

Phishing is described as a social engineering and cybersecurity attack where the attacker impersonates someone else via email or other electronic communication methods, including social networks and Short Message Service (SMS) text messages, to reveal sensitive information.

Typically, a victim receives a message that appears to have been sent by a known contact or organization. The attack is then carried out either when the victim clicks on a malicious file attachment or clicks on a hyperlink connecting them to a malicious website. In either case, the attacker’s objective is to install malware on the user’s device or direct them to a fake website. Fake websites are set up to trick victims into divulging personal and financial information, such as passwords, account IDs or credit card details.

Verdict

The public should always access the official link released by the organization, agency or government meant for a publicized application and must always be aware of phishing links.
