Concerns within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have surfaced over the party’s acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum’s silence regarding claims made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Wike asserted that he notified Damagum in writing when nominated by President Bola Tinubu for a ministerial position.
While the PDP and its 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, are challenging the declaration of Bola Tinubu as the winner of the February 25 presidential election, Wike accepted a cabinet position.
This decision raised concerns within Atiku’s camp, leading the former vice president to remind Wike of potential sanctions at an appropriate time.
Party chieftains have expressed worries over Wike’s continued membership in the PDP, which poses a significant threat to Atiku’s potential political future within the party.
They are questioning Damagum’s silence and the lack of response to Wike’s claims.
One party member and former governor, who remained anonymous, expressed concerns about the situation, stating, “Why is Damagum silent? If Wike wrote to him, did he present the letter before the NWC members? Were they also aware?” He emphasized that this situation is unusual for the PDP.
A member of the National Working Committee (NWC) also voiced concerns and noted that Wike’s continued influence within the party, especially within the NWC, could hinder Atiku’s ability to lead effectively.
The Deputy National Youth Leader of the PDP, Timothy Osadolor, assured party members that the party’s direction should not be solely determined by Wike and emphasized that the issues at hand would be resolved.
He emphasized Atiku’s commitment to the rule of law and the pending Presidential Election Petition Court ruling as a potential turning point for the party.
