OAU final year student beaten to death on campus over stealing of phone

A final year student of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has been beaten to death by an angry mob over alleged stealing of phone on campus.

The mob accused the student whose identity has not yet been revealed, of stealing the phone from Awo Hall of Residence of the school on Monday April 10.

The angry mob, instead of reporting the incident to the authority of the academic institution, took law into their hands and beat the final year student to death.

The student of the Department of Civil Engineering was later hospitalized to the OAU Teaching Hospital in Ile-Ife, Osun State where he finally passed away.

The incident was confirmed in a statement released by the spokesperson of the university, Abiodun Olarewaju.

The statement acknowledged that the victim was lost to a “mob action on the allegation.”

The academic institution spoke against the circumstances which triggered the passing of the student.

The varsity promised to make sure those carried out the jungle justice are sanctioned accordingly.

“Saddened by this ugly development which he described as unfortunate, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Bamire, has set up a committee to unravel the circumstances that led to this incident,” the statement reads.

“The action of the mob, being a violation of the law of the country and of the University regulations, has been reported to the police who have commenced investigations.

“The University administration hereby commiserates with the parents of the deceased, staff and students, and prays that God will grant us the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”

OAU also implored students to discard taking laws into their hands and urged students to report any criminality to authorities of the school for immediate response.
