Nnamdi Kanu files N60bn defamation suit against Reno Omokri
Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has taken legal action against Reno Omokri, a fervent supporter of President Bola Tinubu, as reported by his Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor. The suit, filed in the Enugu High Court, addresses alleged defamatory publications made by Omokri against Kanu and the IPOB.
In the writ of summons, Kanu is demanding N60 billion in damages, which includes N50 billion for general damages linked to defamation, as well as N10 billion for aggravated damages due to the malicious dissemination of false statements.
Kanu’s legal team is also requesting that the court order Omokri to issue a formal apology in national newspapers for his “highly defamatory and prejudicial publications.” The writ outlines the following key demands:
- A public retraction of the defamatory statements in two national newspapers and on Omokri’s Twitter/X account within seven days of the judgment.
- An acknowledgment of the misrepresentation of facts published as an apology in national media outlets.
- A perpetual injunction preventing Omokri and his affiliates from making further defamatory statements about Kanu without lawful justification.
- Compensation for legal costs associated with the action and interest on monetary awards at a rate of 10% per annum until full payment is made.
Commenting on the legal proceedings, Ejimakor stated on Twitter/X: “Yesterday, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu commenced a muscular legal action against RENO OMOKRI, seeking a retraction, apology & damages for Omokri’s highly defamatory & prejudicial publications against Mazi Kanu, IPOB & #Ndigbo. Others like Omokri should take note & be guided.”
