Man arrested for attempting to smuggle Indian Hemp to relative in Okekura prison
A middle-aged man has been arrested at the Okekura Custodial Centre in Ilorin after officials foiled an attempt to smuggle Indian hemp into the facility.
The suspect was apprehended on Wednesday during a routine check by personnel at the custodial centre.
In a statement issued by the management of the Ilorin Custodial Centre, authorities said the man, who visited under the pretext of seeing an inmate, allegedly attempted to sneak in substances suspected to be hard drugs.
According to the statement, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect tried to bypass standard search procedures, reportedly seeking the assistance of compromised staff to gain unauthorized access.
However, vigilant officers on duty intercepted the move before the substances could be delivered.
The suspect has since been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and possible prosecution.
A source at the NDLEA told The Informant247 that the suspect is a relative of one of the inmates and intended to deliver the drugs to him within the facility.
Meanwhile, authorities at the Ilorin Custodial Centre said internal measures have been strengthened to prevent similar incidents, with security protocols reinforced at all entry points.
The management reiterated its zero tolerance for any breach of operational standards and urged personnel to remain vigilant and uphold professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
