Kwara launches committee to champion food system transformation initiatives
The Kwara State Government has launched its State Technical Working Committee for the Food System Transformation Pathway (FSTP) during a ceremony held at the Accountant General’s Office in Ilorin.
In her inaugural address, Dr. Mary Arinde, Commissioner for Planning and Economic Development and Chairperson of the committee, commended the state for its leadership role in advancing the FSTP initiative. She highlighted the essential role of food in human survival, stating that an increase in food production can significantly alleviate hunger and lower food costs.
Dr. Arinde explained that the FSTP was developed to address the global food security crisis, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and praised Nigerian governments for their commitment to the program since its inception.
She noted that Kwara State’s proactive involvement has resulted in its designation as the zonal coordinator for Kwara, Kogi, and Niger States.
The objectives of the initiative include reducing poverty, unemployment—particularly among youth, hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition. It also aims to promote sustainable food trade and enhance women’s participation in agriculture.
The committee will focus on school gardening, homestead farming, and establishing farm estates to improve food availability and security for farmers.
Dr. Arinde called on stakeholders to contribute their expertise to this vital state initiative, stressing the importance of collaboration for the advancement of Kwara State.
Alh Alimi Surajudeen, Director of Planning at the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, thanked the Commissioner for her dedication and highlighted the connection between the FSTP and the State Committee for Food and Nutrition, indicating that both entities will collaborate to achieve their shared goals.
Mr. Muhammed Ahmed Umar, Director of Livestock, encouraged residents to consider agriculture in any capacity, whether through crop farming or livestock, as a means of ensuring food security and generating supplementary income for families.
