The Force Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), Major General Sunday Igbinomwanhia, confirmed on Saturday that two soldiers and an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) lost their lives while repelling an attack on the rural community of Agatu Local Government Area in Benue State.

It was earlier reported that the attack on Okokolo community in Agatu LGA resulted in the death of two soldiers and two villagers on Thursday.

Igbinomwanhia, in a statement released in Makurdi, detailed the events, stating that troops were alerted to people fleeing Okokolo Community due to the presence of suspected armed herdsmen advancing towards the town.

“On arrival, the troops encountered the bandits carrying out an attack on the community and subsequently engaged the criminals in a gun duel that lasted three hours. The attack was successfully repelled with the terrorists withdrawing in disarray while evacuating their dead and wounded,” he stated.

Regrettably, three troops paid the supreme sacrifice during the operation. In addition to the deaths, two soldiers were wounded and immediately evacuated to the Nigerian Air Force hospital in Makurdi.

The Executive Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, represented by Deputy Governor Barr. Sam Ode, visited the troops to commiserate and assure them of the state government’s continual support.

The force commander commended the troops’ gallantry, encouraging them to remain focused on their mission.

Igbinomwanhia affirmed the Chief of Defence Staff’s support and conveyed news of the wounded soldiers’ speedy recovery. Operations are underway to track the assailants to their hideout.
