Kwara State – Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State has inaugurated the Steering Committee for the Special Agro-industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ) project, a transformative initiative poised to enhance food and nutritional security in the state.
The $57.2 million SAPZ project, supported by the Islamic Development Bank and the state government’s counterpart funding, aims to promote agroprocessing, sustainable farming, and economic growth.
The project is strategically designed to uplift household incomes and generate employment opportunities, particularly for youth and women in rural agricultural communities.
The newly formed Steering Committee, comprising key stakeholders such as the Governor (Chairman), Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Commissioner for Finance, Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Commissioner for Business, Innovation and Technology, Commissioner for Works, Commissioner for Energy, and the State Project Coordinator (SAPZ) who serves as the Secretary, will play a crucial role in overseeing the project’s implementation.
During the inauguration, Governor AbdulRazaq emphasized the significant impact SAPZ could have on Kwara State’s economy and the well-being of its residents. He stated, “This project has the capacity to radically impact the economy and livelihood of so many Kwarans.”
Kwara Governor said that the SAPZ project aligns with the state’s developmental objectives, aiming to increase household incomes, foster job creation, and enhance food and national security.
Governor AbdulRazaq thereby urged the committee members to discharge their duties with utmost commitment, emphasizing the pivotal role SAPZ will play in supporting inclusive and sustainable agro-industrial development in Kwara State.
Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Toyosi Thomas-Adebayo, assured the Governor of the committee’s dedication and commitment to the success of the SAPZ project, acknowledging its importance for the state’s development.
Engr. Busari Toyin Isiaka, the State SAPZ Coordinator, highlighted the strategic direction and policy guidance that the Steering Committee would provide for the project.
Isiaka explained that while SAPZ involves eight states, Kwara, Kano, and Abuja are funded by the Islamic Development Bank, with the project having a five-year lifespan.
