Kwara govt warns against indiscriminate waste dumping, noise pollution

The Kwara State Government has warned residents against indiscriminate waste disposal and noise pollution, saying violators will face the full weight of the law.

The Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa-Buge, issued the warning on Thursday while reviewing reports submitted by Environmental Health Officers and the ministry’s taskforce team.

Musa-Buge said the enforcement drive had become necessary to improve public health, prevent flooding, and maintain a cleaner and safer environment across the state.

She disclosed that the environmental taskforce sealed some facilities within Ilorin metropolis over excessive noise pollution and also intensified efforts against indiscriminate refuse dumping on road medians to prevent disease outbreaks.

According to the commissioner, no fewer than two facilities were sealed for generating excessive and unbearable noise within residential areas, while six persons were arrested for dumping refuse on road medians.

She reaffirmed the commitment of the state government to sustaining a clean, healthy, and development-friendly environment.

Musa-Buge stressed the need for continuous public sensitisation on environmental laws and regulations, particularly on permissible noise levels during night hours.

“It is imperative for members of the public to be properly informed and sensitised on existing environmental regulations, especially regarding permissible noise levels at night,” she said.

The commissioner noted that the warning was particularly important during the festive period when residents and event centres often engage in activities that generate loud noise.

She commended residents who have complied with environmental regulations and appealed to others to support government efforts aimed at keeping the state clean and safe.

“We appreciate those who have continued to comply with environmental regulations towards ensuring a cleaner Kwara. We also appeal to residents to cooperate with government in order to enjoy the benefits of a cleaner and safer environment,” Musa-Buge added.
