A renowned Ilorin-based cleric, Sheikh Mustapha Oloka, has called on stakeholders in Kwara politics not to throw caution to wind by ensuring fair distribution of political offices.
Oloka stated this while delivering a Ramadan lecture on the theme;” Politics, Equity, and Fairness in Islam.”
He said it is important for the leaders, including Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and Former Senate President Bukola Saraki to learn to practice equity and fairness in whatever they do.
“A leader should not be selfish when it comes to the distribution of positions. Even Islam preaches equity and fairness. It encourages even distribution among the members of the society.
“For example, if two Imams were given a cow, and one of them slaughtered it. He was given the part of the neck because he was the person that slaughtered it and the other person takes the whole body including the laps of the cow. Do you think he has been fair to the other Imam?
“If this is related to politics, one region can’t continue to benefit and the others are often cheated. That’s not fair. There should be even distribution as Islam has taught us,” Oloka said.
He, however, urged political stakeholders in the state to come together on good terms and find a way to ensure there is equity and justice in whatever they do.
Oloka’s message comes at a time when the polity is heated up with agitations for power shift.
Several groups and individuals have protested that certain offices including Senatorial seats be rotated among members of other local government areas.
For instance, a group under the umbrella of Ilorin East and South Constituency Youth Stakeholders has written a letter to the State Governor, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq seeking the zoning of Kwara Central Senatorial Seat to Ilorin East and South constituency in 2023.
The group said its agitations were borne out of the dominance of Ilorin West members who have occupied the office since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.
