JUST IN: Abducted Benue JAMB candidates, others regain freedom

All 13 remaining passengers, including the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination candidates abducted from an 18-seater Benue Links bus last Wednesday along the Makurdi-Otukpo road by armed men, have regained their freedom-Vanguard news reported on Sunday morning.

The Benue State Police Commissioner, Mr. Ifeanyi Emenari confirmed the rescue on Sunday morning

It was gathered that about eight of the released victims were candidates of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, examinations who were heading to Otukpo for their exam when they were abducted.

Details surrounding their rescue have not yet been made public by the authorities; however, sources indicate that the victims were freed in the early hours of Sunday.

The passengers were reportedly held captive for about three days following the attack on the bus while en route to Otukpo.

Security operatives were said to have intensified efforts in the area in the days leading up to their rescue on Sunday morning.

The victims were immediately evacuated for urgent medical care and are currently receiving treatment at the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital in Otukpo.

However, repeated attacks along major routes such as the Makurdi–Otukpo highway have continued to raise concerns about the safety of commuters, particularly students and other vulnerable travellers.
