Iran slams US over alleged visa denial ahead of 2026 World Cup
Iran has criticised the United States over the alleged denial of visas to some members of its football delegation ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Iranian national team is set to make its seventh World Cup appearance, but ongoing diplomatic tensions between Tehran and Washington have continued to cast a shadow over its participation in the tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Reports emerged that some Iranian football officials were denied entry visas to the US, prompting a strong reaction from the Iranian Embassy in South Africa.
In a post on X, the embassy described the US as an “incompetent host” and accused it of failing to meet its obligations as a World Cup host nation.
“The incompetent FIFA World Cup host, USA, is failing to fulfil its responsibilities properly,” the embassy stated.
“We are guests of FIFA, and it is FIFA’s responsibility to ensure that visas for all members are issued.”
According to Reuters, the Iranian delegation is expected to travel to Mexico, where efforts will continue to resolve the outstanding visa issues before entering the United States.
Iran has been drawn in Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. All of Iran’s group-stage matches are scheduled to be played in the United States, with their final group fixture against Egypt set to take place in Washington.
The development adds another layer of uncertainty to Iran’s preparations for the tournament, amid ongoing concerns over travel and diplomatic restrictions.
