Ilorin stakeholders back Tinubu, support Saliu Mustapha for governor
A group of political stakeholders in Ilorin has declared support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second-term bid, while also backing Senator Saliu Mustapha as its preferred candidate for the Kwara State governorship in 2027.
The position was made known on Tuesday at a press conference held by the Ilorin Emirate Political Advisory Council (IEPAC), where members outlined what they described as their collective political direction ahead of the next general election cycle.
Speaking at the briefing, the Council’s National Coordinator, Dr. Yakub Yahaya Oloriegbe, said the decision followed extensive consultations and a review of political developments across the state and the country.
According to him, the stakeholders resolved to support Tinubu’s re-election based on what they termed his administration’s performance over the past three years, as well as what they described as increased federal attention to Kwara Central.
“We believe the president deserves another four years to consolidate on the gains recorded so far,” Oloriegbe said.
On the 2027 governorship race, the council threw its weight behind Senator Saliu Mustapha, citing his experience, political reach and perceived capacity to lead the state.
The stakeholders noted that Mustapha’s profile and acceptance across different blocs position him as a viable contender capable of winning the election and governing effectively.
They, however, clarified that their endorsement does not foreclose the ambitions of other aspirants.
“This position does not in any way preclude other aspirants from exercising their legitimate rights to contest,” the council stated, stressing that the political space remains open.
The group also called on political actors and parties in the state to work towards unity and stability as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
IEPAC added that it would continue to monitor political developments and may extend support to other candidates it considers capable of sustaining the current administration’s achievements in the state.
