Hon. Ganiyu Salau champions the integration of agricultural science in Kwara schools
The Kwara State House of Assembly, in its plenary session on led by Speaker RT. Hon. Engr. Yakubu Danladi Salihu Tuesday, October 22, 2024, took a decisive step towards reshaping the future of education in the state, the Assembly deliberated on a crucial motion aimed at integrating Agricultural Science into the curriculum of primary and secondary schools across the state.
The motion, presented by Hon. Ganiyu Folabi Salau (Omupo) and seconded by Hon. Maryam Yusuf (Ilorin South), called for making Agricultural Science a compulsory subject for students at the primary level. In his address, Hon. Salau underscored the critical role of agricultural education in achieving self-sufficiency and economic sustainability.
“Agricultural Science is not just a subject, but a pathway to equipping our children with life skills that will empower them and sustain our economy,” Salau noted. He emphasized that the subject combines theory with hands-on learning, helping young students understand the source of their food, adopt healthier eating habits, and cultivate entrepreneurial skills through agro-business ventures.
Salau expressed concern over the declining emphasis on agricultural education in recent years, with many schools treating it as an optional subject. He warned that this trend has deprived students of the opportunity to explore agriculture’s potential, contributing to rising unemployment and deterring youth from careers in the sector. “We must act swiftly to make Agricultural Science mandatory, ensuring our children are prepared to lead in a world where food security and sustainability are paramount,” Salau stated.
The motion received widespread support from other members, including Hon. Bello Yinusa Oniboki (Afon) and Hon. Muhammed Kareem Musa (Patigi). They echoed Salau’s sentiments, highlighting the potential of agricultural education to combat unemployment and boost the state’s economy.
Following these contributions, the House commended Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq for his efforts to strengthen food security in Kwara and urged him to direct the Ministry of Education to reintegrate Agricultural Science as a core subject in the state’s basic education curriculum.
This move, if implemented, is expected to equip future generations with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in a fast-evolving agricultural landscape, ensuring the long-term prosperity of the state.
