Gov AbdulRazaq desperate to keep illegal control over LG funds: Kwara PDP
The Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for allegedly attempting to deceive the public with contradictory positions on local government autonomy.
In a statement issued Wednesday and signed by state publicity secretary Olusegun Olusola Adewara, the PDP condemned the governor for filing an objection to the Federal Government’s case at the Supreme Court, which aims to grant autonomy to local governments.
The party claimed that AbdulRazaq’s actions were a desperate attempt to maintain control over local government funds.
Olusegun said that last week, the PDP praised the Federal Government’s decision to challenge Abdulrazaq at the Supreme Court to free the 16 local governments from what they termed as his manipulation. However, they criticized the governor for opposing the move and for suggesting that local government autonomy would impoverish the people.
The PDP described the governor’s subsequent statement distancing himself from the Supreme Court filings as double standards and called for him to apologize to the people of Kwara. They also demanded he withdraw the objection filed at the Supreme Court.
The party accused Abdulrazaq of undermining local government autonomy since taking office in 2019, including dissolving the democratic structure of the 16 local government areas and appointing his surrogates as caretaker committees. They pointed that his absence during a constitutional amendment process aimed at granting full autonomy to local governments.
The PDP urged Kwarans to disregard Abdulrazaq’s press statements as mere propaganda and to prepare for local government elections to end his administration’s control over local governments.
