On Monday, October 23, Nigeria’s football goal king, Rashidi Yekini clocked 60th posthumously.
The Google, remembering the heroism of Yekini used its main Doodle to celebrate the Kwara-born football legend on his 60th birthday.
Rashidi died in 2012 at the age of 48 under a controversial circumstances.
The conic Nigerian footballer is reputed for scoring 37 times in his 58 games for Nigeria, a record that sees him currently holding the record for most goals scored for the country.
Although had a difficult life growing up at his place of birth in Kaduna, he would later found his way into football joined his first football club ‘UNTL FC’ in Kaduna in 1981.
He would later play for the Shooting Stars and scored an impressive number of 45 goals in 53 games.
Yekini, in 1983, on the heels of his outstanding performance won the ‘African Footballer of the Year’, and became the first Nigerian player to receive the prestigious honor.
Apart from Nigeria, his career also saw him played for football clubs in Spain, Tanzania, Saudi, Tunisia, Greece, Portugal, Arabia, and Switzerland.
While playing for Vitoria Setúbal of Portugal , he won the Bola de Prata (Silver Ball) for being the league’s top-scoring player the in 1993-94 season.
He also helped Nigeria’s national team ‘Super Eagles’ to qualify for the 1994 World Cup. During that time, he scored the first goal of the World Cup for Nigeria.
Rashidi remains one the most celebrated Nigerian footballer in the history of the country
