#EndSARS: SERAP threatens to sue NBC over ‘unconstitutional fines’

The Socia-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has given the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) 48 hours to withdraw the N9m fines imposed on Channels TV, AIT and Arise TV over their coverage on the #ENDSARS protests in Nigeria.

The nation’s broadcasting regulatory body had on Monday fined Arise News, African Independent Television (AIT) and Channels Television N3 million each. The broadcast Stations were accused of using unverified social media photos and videos of the protests and unrest.

The sanction was announced by the NBC Acting Director-General, prof Armstrong Idachaba on Monday in Abuja during press conference.

SERAP disclosed this via its official Twitter handle, describing the act as an unconstitutional.

SERAP tweeted, “We condemn the illegal fines of N9m reportedly imposed by the National Broadcasting Commission on Channels TV, AIT and Arise TV (N3m each) over their coverage of the ENDSARS protests.

“We will sue the NBC if the unconstitutional fines are not rescinded within 48 hours.”
