…court commences hearing
The case of alleged brutality meted on the former scribe of the Ilorin branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Sulyman Abaya, by the Ilorin zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) today, took a dramatic twist as Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Joseph Bamigboye and no fewer than 37 lawyers stormed court to seek redress.
The lawyer through his counsel, Bamigboye, was accusing the EFCC of arresting and detailing him unlawfully.
Bamigboye, in his submission told the court that his colleague was convicted of an offence he allegedly committed when he has not been tried in the court of law.
According to him, it’s unconstitutional to post pictures of a suspect on internet when he has not been investigated and convicted.
He stressed further that to his dismay, the document the commission claimed his client forged was not presented to the court as prove.
The EFCC counsel, Andrew Akoja informed the court that the action of the commission is guarded by law and their mode of operation.
According to him, the idea of uploading suspect photograph on internet is applicable even in the international clime, saying Abaya is only been zealour over the matter because he’s a lawyer.
Justice Hammed Gegele, in his ruling adjourned the suit for judgement noting that the date will be communicated to the two parties.
Recalled that Abaya was accused of allegedly duping one Pastor Adedoyin to the tune of over N25million.
He, however kicked against this allegations, and vowed to take legal action against what he described as “despicable, unprofessional and dastard act” of the body.
Abaya revealed that he was forced at gunpoint to carry placards after initially refusing such request.
