Court remands 2 men in prison over alleged armed robbery, culpable homicide

Two men were on Monday remanded in a correctional facility over culpable homicide and armed robbery.

They were remanded in the order of a Makurdi Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Mvendaga Pav and Denongu Buruku were charged by the police with armed robbery, conspiracy, culpable homicide and acts of terrorism.

Sonia Yaikyur, the Magistrate rejected the plea of the defendants for want in jurisdiction.

Yaikyur directed that they should be kept at the Makurdi Correctional Centre till further and proper investigation.

She has adjourned the matter until January 26 for further mention.

Sgt Regina Ishaya, who’s the Prosecution Counsel, informed the court that the State CID of the Nigerian Police Benue, got a petition which was signed by Capt. MJ Ekpo for the Nigerian Army Corps of Military Police 401 Special Forces Brigade, Joe Akaahan Barracks Makurdi and which was dated October 14, 2022.

She disclosed that the petition revealed that a personnel of the unit staff Sgt. Jirgba Moses  working at Zaki- Biam, Ukum L.G.A Benue while on duty along Gbaka/Wali village was killed by armed gang.

She said the gang laid ambush and started shooting sporadically at the officer and dispossessed him of his service rifle Breech No 3602 which contains one magazine with 30 rounds of live ammunition.

The police revealed that they also received from him motorcycle and cell phones.

The prosecutor also said investigation was still ongoing and persuaded that the court adjourn the sitting.

She added that the offence was in violation of the provisions of sections 6(b) 1(1)(2)(a)(b) of the robbery and firearms special provision act 2004, 4(2) of the Abduction, Hostage taking, kidnapping, secret cult and similar activities prohibition Laws of Benue 2004.
