Bandits strike Patigi again less than 24 hours after previous attack

Less than 24 hours after the latest attack, bandits have struck again in Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State, heightening concerns over the safety of residents despite repeated appeals for increased security presence in the area.

NupekoTV reports that the latest incident occurred at about 9pm when a commercial motorcyclist travelling from Lata Nna with a passenger was reportedly intercepted by the attackers.

The motorcycle rider reportedly escaped, while the unidentified passenger, who was said not to be a resident of the community, was abducted.

The fresh attack came amid repeated calls by residents for the deployment of military personnel to the area and assurances by the government that steps would be taken to strengthen security.

Speaking during NupekoTV’s online interactive session on Sunday evening, community youths, women and other residents expressed frustration over what they described as the continued vulnerability of the community to attacks.

The residents said they had continued to provide information to government authorities and security agencies on the activities of the bandits, including information concerning persons already held captive.

They, however, said they were increasingly concerned that their efforts had not translated into adequate protection for the community.

According to them, residents have suffered significant losses as insecurity continues to disrupt their livelihoods, particularly farming, which they said remains the major source of income for the community.

The residents also rejected suggestions that the community had any previous links with terrorists, stressing that they had instead been victims of repeated attacks and insecurity.

They further alleged that some suspected bandit kingpins arrested by security agencies had at various times been released, a development they said had raised questions about the effectiveness of efforts to combat banditry in the area.

The community members also expressed disappointment over repeated promises of military deployment, describing the situation as “promise upon promise” while residents continue to live under threat.

The latest incident has further intensified calls for urgent security intervention in Patigi LGA as residents remain concerned about their safety and ability to access their farms and carry out their daily activities.
