2027: ADC denies plan to merge with PRP

The African Democratic Congress (ADC), says the party is not considering any alliance with the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).

This was contained in a post on X on Monday by ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi.

Bolaji described the claim of merger as untrue, noting that the coalition leadership is not engaged in any conversation with another political party at the moment.

“Our attention has been drawn to a story in circulation that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is in talks with another political party, specifically the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), in anticipation of its court judgment. We would like to state categorically that this is not true,” he said.

Abdullahi noted that the coalition remains focused on challenging what it described as an “illegal action” taken against its leadership by INEC and alleged agents of the ruling party.

“The coalition leadership is not having any such conversation with any political party at the moment. We are fully committed to ensuring that the illegal action taken against our leadership by INEC and other agents of the ruling party is upturned,” he added.

The ADC spokesperson noted that the party believes overturning the action is critical to safeguarding the rule of law and preserving Nigeria’s multiparty democracy.

While reiterating openness to expanding its coalition to accommodate other opposition elements, Abdullahi noted that the ADC is not considering abandoning its platform.

“Any suggestion that we are considering abandoning the ADC is preemptive and speculative, and should be ignored,” he said.

“Notwithstanding the flagrant bastardisation of democratic institutions, the ADC leadership remains confident that the judicial institutions will, at this defining moment, resist the pressure to be complicit in undermining Nigeria’s democracy,” Abdullahi added.

Recalls that since April 1, when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) derecognised the David Mark-led ADC leadership and the Nafiu Bala group over the March 12 court of appeal judgment, there has been insinuations that opposition leaders may be quietly looking to coalesce into other political parties, including the PRP, ahead of the 2027 general election
