The former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi has said that lecturers of public universities in Nigeria may embark on a fresh strike in 2023.
The former leader of the union made this revelation while granting a television interview.
The Informant247 recalls that the last industrial action which ASUU embarked on lasted over 8 months in 2022.
This came following the demands of the union for better welfare and the payment of owed earned allowances, among others.
However, the industrial action was brought to an end following the Industrial Court’s order which directed the lecturers of the public universities to return to class.
The Federal Government only made a payment of half of their salaries for the month of October, on the ground that they did not work for it, and so did not deserve its pay.
The former leader of the union said the federal government is not sensitive to the demands of the union and declared that it’s not just for the government to deny them their pay in arrears as well.
“We must understand what triggers strike action. I don’t think anybody can promise you there will be no strike (in 2023),” Ogunyemi said.
