Wayne Rooney has reacted to his sacking as Birmingham City FC Manager. The former Manchester United striker was shown the exit door at the club after another unsuccessful coaching attempt.
Rooney in a statement shared on his X account, expressed gratitude to the club’s executives and acknowledged the support received during his brief stint.
While noting the demands for result, he admitted the team’s performance fell short of his aspirations but stressed that time were not enough to implement changes.
“I would like to thank Tom Wagner, Tom Brady, and Garry Cook for the opportunity to manage Birmingham City FC and the support they all gave me during my short period with the club.
“Football is a results business and I recognise they have not been at the level I wanted them to be. However, time is the most precious commodity a manager requires and I do not believe 13 weeks was sufficient to oversee the changes that were needed.”
Rooney muted the need for personal recovery after his managerial setbacks, even as he noted the need for a dedication to family time while also hinting at preparing for the next managerial chapter.
“Personally, it will take me some time to get over this setback. I have been involved in professional football, as either a player or manager, since I was 16. Now, I plan to take some time with my family as I prepare for the next opportunity in my journey as a manager. Finally, I wish Birmingham City FC and its owners my best wishes in the pursuit of their ambitions.”
Appointed by the new owner, Tom Wagner in October, Rooney’s reign at Birmingham was again less of no different from his last stints at DC United.
Under his watch, Birmingham lost nine matches in 15, landing them in the 20th spot on the Championship table.
