For the second time in a row, the University of Port Harcourt (Uniport) has emerged champions of the 26th edition of the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) held at the University of Lagos.

It was yet another dominant performance from the defending champions as they edge out other institutions in a grand style while amassing a total number of 60 gold, 29 silver, and 20 bronze medals to retain the trophy they won in 2017 edition.

The 10-day multi-sports event which ended on Saturday also saw the host, Unilag securing the second spot with a total number of 86 medals( 33 gold, 34 silver, and 19 bronze medals).

Nile University, a private institution based in Abuja made a good account of themselves by clinching the third position on the log with 15 gold, 10 silver, and 13 silver medals- thus racking up a total number of 38 medals.

Fourth on the final medals table is the University of Ilorin. The institution stamped its feet on the ‘eye catching’ space of the log with a total number of 49 medals with 11 gold, 12 silver, and 16 bronze medals making the breakdown.

In total, a record number of 655 medals were won throughout the tournament by all institutions with 192 gold, 192 silver, and 271 bronze medals making the breakdown.

While the University of Jos has been cleared to host the next edition of the games, winners of gold medals in this year’s event have consequently won themselves another stage of contest in the West African University Games (WAUG).

NUGA is reputed to be one of the oldest higher institution sporting events in Nigeria. In its over 50 years of existence, it has been providing a platform for University students to sharpen their skills, maximize their potential while also aiding National cohesion.

Founded in 1966 at the University of Ibadan following the first West African University Games (WAUG) in Ibadan in 1965. In 1970, NUGA became a member of the World Federation of University Games (FISU), and in 1974 was a founding member of the All Africa University Games Association (FASU).
