UNILORIN First-Class graduate gets Saraki’s support for Italy scholarship trip
Former Senate President, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has pledged to fund the outstanding relocation expenses of Adisa Blessing Oluwafikayo, a first-class Mathematics graduate of the University of Ilorin, who recently secured a fully funded Master’s scholarship at the University of Calabria, Italy.
Saraki made a commitment on Tuesday via his verified X handle, @bukolasaraki, after seeing the graduate’s appeal for financial assistance to facilitate her travel.
Oluwafikayo, who graduated with a CGPA of 4.76 on a 5.0 scale, had earlier taken to social media to seek support, noting that while her scholarship covered tuition and core academic expenses, she required additional funds for relocation and settlement.
Responding to the appeal, Saraki commended her academic achievement, describing it as a reflection of excellence and the potential of young Nigerians.
“To graduate with a First Class in Mathematics from UNILORIN and then secure a fully funded Master’s admission in Italy is an extraordinary achievement,” he wrote. “No young person who has worked this hard should have such an opportunity limited by the cost of getting there.”
He added that it would be his privilege to cover the remaining relocation costs, noting that a member of his office would reach out to her to facilitate the support.
Saraki’s intervention has attracted widespread commendation on social media, with many users praising the gesture as a demonstration of leadership that prioritises youth development and education.
As reported by the Punch newspaper, several commenters described the move as inspiring, noting that such support could encourage academic excellence among Nigerian youths, while others highlighted its timeliness amid prevailing economic challenges.
The development comes as increasing numbers of young Nigerians seek educational opportunities abroad, often constrained by financial limitations despite securing scholarships.
Saraki, a former governor of Kwara State, has a record of supporting educational initiatives, including assistance to outstanding students of the University of Ilorin. His latest gesture further underscores his continued advocacy for youth empowerment through education.
