The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, has confirmed that an Associate Professor at the University of Lagos, Kadiri Akeem, will face court proceedings for allegedly raping a 20-year-old student of the institution.
The lecturer, Kadiri Akeem Babalola, an Associate Professor of Botany, was apprehended by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly sexually assaulting a female student of the university.
The 20-year-old student, whose identity remains undisclosed, accused Babalola of committing the crime during her visit to the professor’s office to discuss issues related to her academic results.
She reported the incident to the Inclusive Social Welfare and Empowerment Foundation, stating that the alleged assault occurred on August 16, 2023.
Subsequently, the NGO reported the case to the Gender Unit of the Lagos State Police Command.
This prompted Commissioner of Police Idowu Owohunwa to issue a warrant for Babalola’s arrest through the state High Court, following a seven-day ultimatum given to the UNILAG Vice-Chancellor to produce the professor.
It was further revealed that Babalola admitted to the crime when summoned for questioning by the Vice-Chancellor.
According to Vanguard Newspaper, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer said, “He has been arrested and is currently in our custody. He will be arraigned in court in the coming days, and we will keep the public informed.”
