The World football governing body, FIFA and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have congratulated the Flamingos for winning the bronze medal of the U17 Women’s World Cup in India after defeating Germany  3-2 on penalties.

While the Nigerian team lost their 3-0 lead in the game to a come back from the European Champions to make it 3-3, the Bankole Olowookere led side would eventually have a date with history when they edge their opponents on penalties- a clear revenge of how the German team defeated them 2-1 in the opening group game.

It was an impressive outing for the girls who couldn’t make it to the final after losing 6-5 to Columbia in the semi final. They became the first African team to achieve the bronze medal feat in the competition.

Congratulating Nigeria, FIFA wrote on the official Twitter handle for the competition, “Bronze goes to the Nigeria!Congratulations.”

In similar vein, the Nigeria Football Federation NFF on its Facebook handle congratulated the team on their victory.

“Congratulations to our Flamingos who finished third at the #U17WWC in India. We are proud of your feat.”

It is the 7th edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, the multinational–international women’s youth football championship, contested by the under-17 national teams of the member associations of FIFA, since its inception in 2008
