A truck crushed some students who were heading home after school hours in the Ojodu axis of Lagos State, on Tuesday.
It was learnt that the truck rammed into the Secondary students as a result of brake failure.
The driver of the truck reportedly fled the scene but he was later arrested. Some students who got angry by the development blocked a major road in the area and vandalised vehicles, especially trucks.
It was gathered that the incident compounded the traffic jam on the ever-busy road which links to Agege, Ikeja, Iyana-Ipaja and other parts of the city.
While trying to disperse the crowd, policemen from a nearby station, fired teargas into the air but the protesters refused to back down.
Reacting on the incident, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Lagos, Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide, said the truck lost control at Grammar School Bus stop, along Ogunnusi road, Lagos.
He stressed that the accident, which led to the deaths of an unverified number of students, left many persons injured.
He said: “The men of FRSC were called upon by passerby to help intervene after the crash had happened.”
“About seven (7) of the victims were rescued and immediately taken to Lagos State Emergency Centre Ojota by FRSC personnel while another road user helped in carrying about seven (7) also to the same emergency centre.
“The general public should disregard the disgruntled information been circulated by some unscrupulous element that FRSC men caused the crash.
“We want to place on record that our men were not in any way involved in the cause of the crash as patrol activities was not ongoing along that axis as at the time of the crash.
“The FRSC however wishes to commiserate with the families of the deceased, that God will grant them the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss. He also prayed that the injured will recuperate fast.”
