In a tragic incident, Kwara State firefighters successfully retrieved the lifeless body of a 57-year-old woman, Mrs. Jamiu Sikirat, from a well in Ilorin, the capital city of the state.
The unfortunate incident occurred on Monday evening around 6:42 pm when Mrs. Sikirat, a resident of the Ile-Agunko compound in the Adeta area of Ilorin West Local Government Area, accidentally fell into the well.
According to the spokesperson of the state fire service, Hassan Adekunle, they received an alert through a phone call from Mr. Muhammad Jamiu, a resident in the neighborhood where the incident took place.
“Our firefighters promptly responded to the distress call, and they were able to recover the deceased’s body from the well. The body was later handed over to Alfa Abdulganiyu Akuko, a family member of the deceased, in the presence of police officers from Adewole Division in Ilorin,” Adekunle explained.
Reports indicate that the woman had gone to fetch water from the well when one of her legs slipped off the ground, causing her to fall into the well.
Expressing deep sadness over the tragic incident, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, urged the general public to exercise caution in their daily activities and refrain from sending young children to fetch water from wells.
