Tragedy strikes as building collapse claims lives in Kano

A devastating incident unfolded in the Abedi Sabon Gari area of Fagge Local Government, Kano State, on Sunday evening, as a three-storey uncompleted building collapsed, resulting in the death of four individuals and injuries to seven others.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the tragedy on Monday, following extensive search and rescue operations carried out by its Kano Territorial Office.

Dr. Nuraddeen Abdullahi, the agency’s coordinator, reported to the News Agency of Nigeria, “The building came down at about 6:49 p.m. after a prolonged and heavy downpour. Upon receiving the distress alert, we immediately mobilised our Search and Rescue (SAR) response team to the scene in collaboration with other relevant stakeholders.”

Witness accounts revealed that several people were inside the building when it collapsed, many of whom became trapped under the debris. “As of 1:56 a.m. on Monday, two persons had been confirmed dead, while six others were rescued with injuries,” Abdullahi added.

Subsequent updates from the agency confirmed that the toll rose to four lives lost, with seven individuals sustaining varying injuries. Emergency operations at the site have concluded, and authorities are expected to undertake a structural assessment to understand the causes of the collapse and ensure the safety of nearby structures.

This tragic event has sparked renewed concerns amongst the public regarding the safety of uncompleted buildings, especially in flood-prone areas during the rainy season.
