Swift firemen’s response avert gas explosion in Ilorin
The men of the Kwara State Fire Service have swiftly responded to emergency where a 12.5kg gas cylinder was reported to be leaking profusely inside the kitchen of a building consisting of two units of two-bedroom flats.
According to reports, in the early hours of Sunday, residents of Al-Mustafa Street, Olorunsogo Area, Ilorin, narrowly escaped a potential disaster following a gas leak incident. Upon noticing the leakage, the occupants quickly raised an alarm, alerting their neighbors, and ensuring everyone evacuated the premises before the arrival of the Kwara State Fire Service.
Responding to the incident, the firefighters, while displaying professionalism and technical expertise, safely removed the leaking cylinder from the kitchen to a secure location, thereby averting what could have resulted in a devastating explosion.
The statement, while quoting the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, in a statement by PFO Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, Head, Media and Publicity, expressed concern over the continued practice of keeping gas cylinders inside kitchens, describing it as a dangerous habit that endangers lives and property. He strongly warned residents of Kwara State and Nigerians at large to desist from such acts and instead install their gas cylinders outside the kitchen while passing the hose inside for use.
Olumuyiwa further emphasized that in the event of a leakage, having the cylinder outside would make it easier to control and prevent catastrophic incidents.
“The Director commended the bravery and professionalism of the firefighters for their swift and effective intervention, which saved the community from what could have been a major tragedy,” the statement concluded
