Student killed, others injured in Unilorin auto crash

A student of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has been confirmed dead, with others sustaining varying degrees of injuries in a lone auto accident inside the school on Thursday afternoon.

It was gathered that the accident, involving a small commercial bus popularly called ‘Korope’, resulted from a tire burst while the bus was in motion.

The auto crash, which occurred close to the university gate at around 2 pm, saw some of the university’s security officials trying to manage the situation.

A video circulating in the Ilorin metropolis on Thursday showed accident victims on the road writhing in pain, including a female student with blood on her head who appeared lifeless.

The school, in a statement by its Director of Corporate Affairs, Kunle Akogun, confirmed the incident.

The statement reads, “The lone accident involved a commercial bus carrying ten passengers leaving the campus.”

“As soon as it occurred, the University Management immediately commenced rescue operations, and all the victims were moved to the University Health Centre. They were attended to by a team of medical personnel at the University Health Centre,” the statement added.

“One of them needed advanced treatment and was referred to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) after being stabilized.

“Four had minor injuries and were treated and discharged.

“Five victims, including two males, two females, and the driver, are currently receiving treatment at the University Health Centre.

“Unfortunately, one of the victims was brought in dead. The body has been transferred to the morgue, and the University management is making efforts to contact the next of kin.
