Steer clear of Obaseki’s probe, focus on Edo’s development – Wike advises Okpebholo
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has issued a strong warning to Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State against pursuing an investigation into his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki. Wike urged the new governor to concentrate on the development of Edo State instead of engaging in what he described as a distracting probe.
Okpebholo had announced plans last Friday to establish a commission of inquiry to review Obaseki’s administration during a victory parade that included party leaders, civil servants, and community representatives at the Government House in Benin City.
In response, Wike emphasized that such an investigation would not yield fruitful results and could hinder the governor’s ability to govern effectively. He remarked, “If there is someone who would have encouraged Okpebholo to probe and prosecute Obaseki, that person should be me, but what I suffered in ensuring that he returned for a second term and how he paid me back is now in the past.”
Wike added, “We must pass through this process in life, move on for the development of Edo State. Don’t do it, I’m the one who should have told you to pursue this man, I know what I’ve gone through.”
Wike also acknowledged tensions with former Edo Governor Adams Oshiomhole, offering an apology for past grievances. “Leader, I know how pained you are and what you passed through… I was part of it because I humiliated you,” Wike confessed. He called for unity and focus on state development, asserting that personal disputes should not interfere with governance.
Wike’s visit to Benin was meant to inaugurate the New Edo Line Terminal, part of the ongoing improvements in the state, but the event was canceled following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
