Senator raises concerns over alleged robbery, killing of aide by men in army uniform

Senator Olamilekan Adeola, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, has sounded the alarm regarding a distressing incident that occurred on the early morning of Saturday, August 5, 2023.

He revealed that his senior aide, Adeniyi Oluwatosin Sanni, fell victim to robbery and violence allegedly perpetrated by individuals wearing Nigeria Army uniforms at checkpoints around the Ikeja area of Lagos State.

In a personally signed statement, Senator Adeola recounted the events leading up to the tragic incident.

According to him, Mr. Sanni was halted at a checkpoint in the Ojodu-Berger region of Lagos as he was en route to his residence in Isheri.

“Security agents requested documentation for the vehicle he was driving, and he complied by contacting his wife, who promptly sent all the required documents via WhatsApp.

“Subsequently, the wife called again, and Mr. Sanni informed her that soldiers were still inspecting the vehicle’s documents.

“Tragically, this was the last communication she had with her husband. His lifeless body, riddled with bullets, was later discovered near the Toyota Bus Stop in Oshodi, close to a military barracks.”

Senator Adeola stated in an update regarding the police investigation that he is convinced, based on the available evidence, that his aide fell victim to a group of soldiers operating under the command of Brigadier General Nsikan John Edet, the newly deployed Commander of the 9 Brigade, Ikeja Cantonment of the Nigeria Army.

He stated that this group is suspected of carrying out armed robberies through the establishment of checkpoints and targeting lone occupants of vehicles.

Senator Adeola urgently called upon Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, to initiate efforts to identify and apprehend the perpetrators responsible for his aide’s tragic death.

He emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation, prosecution, and justice for the deceased.

Additionally, he highlighted the troubling pattern of killings and armed robberies committed by individuals in army uniforms at late-night checkpoints around Ikeja, urging a thorough review of these incidents.

As the investigation unfolds, Senator Adeola mourns the loss of his aide and remains dedicated to seeking accountability and justice for this senseless act of violence.
