Residents of Olomu Kingdom mourn as world oldest traditional ruler dies
The Ohworode of Olomu Kingdom, Ogoni-Oghoro 1, Royal Canon, OON, HRM, DR, (OVIE) R. L. Ogbon, has reportedly died.
The Chairman, Council of Traditional Rulers Urhobo Nation, was reported to have been the world’s oldest king following his death at the age of 106.
The passing of the respected traditional ruler was announced after a meeting of the traditional council at the Ohworode palace in Ogoni Olomu on Thursday March 16, 2023.
While confirming the passing of the traditional monarch, the Otota of Olomu Kingdom, Olorogun Macaulay Ovbagbedia, said “We can confirm today that our Ohworode has gone back to God. He lived a great life; he served the Government well and his people.
“We are mourning and celebrating, reason is that he was old but it’s painful though.”
Another traditional king, the Akpile of Olomu Kingdom, Olorogun Albert Akpomudje (SAN), said there would be 21 days of mourning in the kingdom, as there would be no celebration of marriage and burial in the kingdom.
He added that the Chiefs are not not expected to adorn themselves in the traditional red cap and they should supplement their dressing with a black armband during the time.
He said burial arrangements would be made public soon.
He revealed that the traditional monarch celebrated his birth anniversary on 20 January following serious battle with health deficiency over a period of 2 months.
Delta State University Abraka had honored Ohworode of Olomu with an Honorary doctorate degree for his contribution to education.
