The management of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi (ATBU), on Friday, announced the extension of the resumption date for the undergraduates at the University to January 7, 2024.
The Informant247 recalled on Monday that the management of ATBU closed down the institution for a period of one week after the students protested the killing of a 500-level student, who was stabbed to death by suspected robbers. The protest subsequently degenerated into the breakdown of law and order.
According to a statement signed by ATBU Director, Information and Public Relations Alhaji Zailani Bappa, in an emergency meeting held at the Senate Chamber in Gubi Campus, the Senate resolved that the one-week closure of the university be extended to January 7, 2024.
Bappa explained that the university management earlier announced the closure of the university to all undergraduates for an initial period of one week, from 4th to 10th December 2023, to avert possible breakdown of law and order on the two campuses of Yelwa and Gubi.
“This followed an upheaval by some aggrieved students after the demise of one of their colleagues who was reportedly attacked by unknown assailants in Yelwan Ngas, a suburb of Bauchi town, which led to his untimely death,” Bappa added.
