Police arrest woman who allegedly cut off 11-month-old baby’s head
The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a woman for allegedly cutting off the head of her 11 month old child in Yonen community of Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area of the state.
This was confirmed, Wednesday by the spokesperson of the police command, SP Irene Ugbo in Calabar, the capital of the state.
Ugbo revealed that the woman took the life of her child on Tuesday.
She said the police command immediately mobilised its men to the affected scene where the angry mob was prevented from attacking the suspect.
The image maker of the police command said that the case file will be moved to the homicide department for necessary and adequate investigation.
“It is quite unfortunate and devastating, already she is in protective custody, but the matter will surely be brought to Calabar,” the spokesman added.
It gathered that the woman allegedly beheaded the child’s head with machete.
A source who witnessed the scenario revealed that the 8-year-old son of the woman cried out after witnessing the horrible occurrence and which caught the attention of the neighbours.
The traditional ruler of the affected community, at the Obol Lopon of Ugep has informed the residents to stay calm as the police is currently looking into the matter.
“I immediately convened a meeting with my subjects because even though what happened has desecrated the land, I had to ensure that further bloodshed was averted.
“We appealed directly to young people in Ugep to tow the path of peace and rational thought in the face of this heinous crime and they positively responded.
“We are in shock, but we are calm and have left this matter in the hands of the police.
“I assure you that there will be no reprisal action because we must remain law abiding”, he said.
