Osun Gov Adeleke orders reintroduction of e-tablets in Osun schools
The Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke has ordered the Ministry of Education; Science and Innovation to consider the re-introduction of a digital learning tablet in the state’s schools.
This was considered by the Governor as a way to redeem the educational image of the state, following the state’s educational performance under the immediate past government.
The governor declared his readiness to improve the educational sector of the state through technological innovations.
The Informant247 recalls that the administration of a former Governor, now Federal Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola first introduced e-tablets and computers to facilitate teaching and learning in the state.
300,000 students were beneficiaries of this scheme, as the pass rate of senior secondary students’ increased by over 193%.
The programme enabled the saving of over N8.4b in annual textbook expenses
The programme was consolidated on by the immediate past governor, Adegboyega Oyetola’s as he withdrew the gadget from pupils.
Governor Adeleke said: “It does not abide by best practice.”
“A more trending solution is to apply technology in our schools. In the past, application of tech innovations in schools failed due to failure to abide by best practice. Administrators then abandoned expert advice, hence the failure of such innovations. Our government is ready to infuse technology to aid learning, to assist teachers and to improve the learning environment.
“Part of the reason for failure in national examinations is lack of familiarity with computer systems. The majority of our pupils are not able to use computers until a few days before their examinations. Unfortunately, most examinations are now computer based. Upgrading pupils’ computer skills is, therefore, one of the major goals of my administration.”
He added: “We must put them to good use for the betterment of our education system. I call on the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Science and Innovation to study the possibility of introducing tablets to the senior secondary school level. This will address the increasing cost of book purchase and also enhance Osun’s readiness for e-learning.”
