Obi proposes one-term presidency to coalition, says four years enough to fix Nigeria problems
The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Yunusa Tanko, has announced that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections, has submitted a proposal for a one-term presidency to the coalition for consideration.
Obi expressed his willingness to serve as a one-term president until 2027, emphasizing the need for any candidate from the South to adhere to the “unwritten power-sharing agreement” and zoning principle, which mandates that they should step down by May 28, 2031.
In this coalition, Obi joins former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, and Nasir el-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna, as they prepare to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming elections.
On Tuesday, the coalition endorsed the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their platform.
Yunusa stated that Obi’s one-term proposal has been formally presented to the coalition, reinforcing the idea that “this is a pronouncement rooted in integrity, and Peter Obi embodies that. What Nigeria needs now are leaders with integrity.” Tanko also noted that while the concept of a single term is not written into the constitution, Obi is confident that four years will be sufficient to implement his vision for the country.
