Kwara launches small claims court initiatives for farmers, small business owners

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Afees Abolore Alabi, is encouraging farmers and business owners across Kwara State to fully utilize the newly established Small Claims Court, a significant part of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s Ease of Doing Business initiative.

Speaking at a sensitization programme held at the Kwara State Innovation Hub in Ilorin, Dr. Abolore highlighted that the Small Claims Court offers a streamlined process for resolving financial disputes involving amounts up to ₦3 million, with a goal of reaching resolutions within 60 days.

“This court offers a clear and fair route for our farmers and business people to address such challenges. It is a bold and people-centered reform by Governor AbdulRazaq that speaks directly to the needs of the grassroots,” Dr. Abolore stated.

He further pointed out that the court is particularly beneficial for the agricultural sector, helping farmers resolve issues such as payment defaults and disputes concerning produce deliveries. “This mechanism will protect farmers’ income and enhance trust among stakeholders in the agricultural value chain,” he added.

Dr. Abolore commended the Governor for prioritizing the welfare of the people and enhancing public trust in governance. He emphasized that reforms like the Small Claims Court not only support local businesses but also build investor and community confidence in the state’s justice system.

“I urge all actors in the agricultural and informal sectors to take advantage of this platform to settle disputes, protect their income, and maintain productive engagement across the value chain,” he encouraged.

The event saw the participation of notable figures, including the Chief Judge of Kwara State, Hon. Justice Abiodun Adebara, and various government officials, all affirming the commitment to enhancing access to justice and supporting the growth of agricultural enterprises throughout the state.
