NSCDC marks International Civil Defence Day in Bayelsa The Informant247

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Bayelsa Command, on Tuesday reiterated its preparedness to collaborate with other stakeholders for disaster response operations.

Mrs Christiana Abiakam-Omanu, State Commandant of NSCDC in Bayelsa, said this at an event to commemorate the 2022 International Civil Defence Day celebration in Yenagoa.

Abiakam-Omanu, who read the message of Mariatou Yap, the Secretary-General of the International Civil Defence Organisation (ICDO) said it was imperative to accommodate volunteers in disaster response and management operations.

The theme for the 2022 International Civil Defence Day is: “Civil Defence and Management of Displaced Populations in the Face of Disasters and Crises; Role of Volunteers and the Fight Against Pandemics”

The ICDO chief, in her message, urged the international community to capitalise on the potential of volunteers in the coordinated management of movement of people and in the fight against the ongoing pandemic.

“The mobilisation of volunteers for disaster risk management is recommended at all levels of society.

“This is more so the case in the prevention phase, in environments that bring together people on a continuous basis such as schools, markets, hospitals among others.

“In all cases whether in risk prevention or disaster response for which more specialised volunteers are required, volunteering must be taken into account in national, sectoral or specific response plans,” she said.

Abiakam-Omanu, on her part, noted that the day coincided with the coming on board of the Commandant General of NSCDC, Dr Ahmed Audi, making it double celebration for the corps.

She said that the leadership of the Commandant General had inspired the NSCDC in Bayelsa to work harder, leading to a more efficient operation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that activities to celebrate the occasion include parades, accident and disaster response drills as well as tug-of-war between male and female squads of NSCDC in Bayelsa.

The occasion was attended by representatives of various security agencies in Bayelsa. (NAN)
