The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Benue Command on Friday dragged one 34-year-old Robert Ahen, before a court over alleged criminal conspiracy and other offences.
He was arraigned before a Makurdi Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged criminal conspiracy and other offences.
Ahen is battling a four-count charge of robbery, criminal conspiracy, cheating, extortion and impersonation.
The prosecuting counsel of the NSCDC, Mr Anthony Shaibu, informed the court that the accused was apprehended after a complaint originated from a member of staff of the corps, one Iorlaha Awaza, on November 17.
Shaibu made an allegation that the accused living behind RCM Primary School, Zaki-Biam, Ukum Local Government, had on many occasions barricaded the Federal Highway and robbed drivers.
He also made an allegation that the accused on or around November 17, with some other persons now at large, illegally barricaded the road block within Benue, extorted and robbed innocent people of their funds and other personal property.
He revealed that the suspect during the investigation admitted to commiting the crime.
The prosecutor further said the actions of the were in contravention of Sections 97, 293, 294, 323, 324, and 399 of the Penal Code, Law of Benue State 2004 CAP 124.
He added that investigation into the case was still progressing and demanded for additional time to conclude it.
Shaibu declared that the NSCDC has a authority to prosecute offences in line with Section 3 (1) (f) of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (amendment) Act 2007.
He added that the power of the corps was also derived from Section 174 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.
However, there was also reelection of plea for want of jurisdiction.
Mrs Rose Ioryshe, the Chief Magistrate, ordered the remand of the accused at the Federal Correctional facility, Makurdi.
She has adjourned the matter till January 10, 2023.
